Let’s explore my top tips to maximize your internship experience.
Network, network, network. You’ve probably heard this advice countless times, but where do you begin?
Start by reaching out to someone whose role interests you, whether it’s within your desired field or something completely new. Don’t worry too much about who you’re reaching out to — every conversation holds value and Insight’s community is incredibly open to connecting. Remember, a single connection or conversation has the potential to reshape your career journey.
Remember Ted Lasso’s wise words, “Be curious, not judgmental.” It’s a straightforward concept — don’t hesitate to ask questions! No question is too simple. For any intern this principle is the key to success. If you have a question, ask somebody. If they don’t know the answer, ask them to refer you to someone who does.
You’ll learn a lot by being curious and not judging others. Ignore anyone who discourages your curiosity — it’s a quality to cherish and cultivate.
Anticipate challenges as an intern. It’s a new experience that comes with questions and struggles. Remember, a single setback or roadblock doesn’t define you. Approach each challenge with a mindset geared toward learning and growth.
With a growth mindset, you’ll get back up after you fall and learn from your struggles. Don’t shy away from struggles — confront them head on. It’s how you respond to the challenges that will prove your mindset and attitude.
Maximizing your internship at Insight is about more than just work. It’s about getting involved with your teammates and building connections. If you attend the internship in person, take advantage of the many out-of-office events that give you the opportunity to take a break from work and have fun.
Additionally, reach out and engage with the other interns. Plan a happy hour, visit an escape room or do something else outside of the office to get to know each other. It gives you the opportunity to bond, learn and explore each other’s perspectives and experiences. This will help grow your relationships with your co-workers and fellow interns, which will only make coming to work even more fun!
Whether it’s your first, second or third internship, embrace your time at Insight. Don’t take it for granted, strive to learn every day and take advantage of this opportunity.
Lastly, just be yourself. It sounds so simple, but it can feel especially tough in a new work environment. This is where your value lies, and being yourself will bring the most value — not only for the company or your team, but for you.
